Campbell River is a city located on the coast of British Columbia. It is on the east coast of Vancouver Island and is along the Inside Passage shipping route. Considered fairly big as cities in Vancouver go, Campbell River offers both its residents and tourists many options in culture, art, shopping and adventure. The millions of salmon traveling through the Discovery Passage every year has caused Campbell River to be known as the Salmon Capital of the world.

Set between Strathcona Park and the Discovery Islands, Campbell River offers many natural resources. Its' climate is fairly mild, with temperatures ranging from 32 degrees to 90 degrees. Snow is common in the winter months although it doesn't usually accumulate to more than 6 inches or so.

With a population of around 33,000, Campbell River has a large forestry industry including both logging companies, pulp mills, and sawmills. Another active industry is mining. Campbell River mines are known for producing many products such as zinc, copper, lead, silver, and even gold.

Its beautiful coastal setting and rich forests allows Campbell River to offer many recreational activities and attractions. Shopping malls surround the island for those who love to spend their vacation looking for treasures. Culture and art also make up a big part of Campbell Rivers attractions. Haig-Brown House is a restored farmhouse that was the home of Roderick and Ann Haig-Brown who were conservationists.

The Museum at Campbell River showcases Campbell River's heritage, and the Campbell River Maritime Heritage Center is the home of the restored seine boat BCP45. You are able to walk right on the boat and explore all that she had to offer.

Of course, the Salmon Capital of the World would not be without a Salmon Festival. Every August, many sports fisherman come to town to celebrate.

Campbell River also has many recreational adventures. The Discovery Passage is great for diving. With an abundance of marine life, and and the HMCS Columbia providing a home for many kinds of sea creatures, the cold clear water has become a diving center for both experienced divers and for beginners.

If you don't dive, you can also see the beautiful sea life by snorkeling. From July to September you just may catch a glimpse of salmon as big as 50 pounds. If you like to stay on top of the water, canoeing and kayaking is a great way to explore. The many lakes and rivers are all connected by portage trails creating 3-4 days worth of paddling adventures.

The coastal waters are also a great spot for salmon fishing. There are numerous charter services and experienced guides, or you can bring your own boat and gear. Which ever way you choose, you are sure to have a great salmon fishing adventure.

The nearby mountains in Strathcona Provincial Park offer climbing and hiking during the summer months, and both downhill and cross country skiing in the winder. Even heli-skiers can be found enjoying the winter scenery.
